On The Image-shaping In The Translation Of Hu Lan He Zhuan From The Perspective Of Engagement System

In the 1930s and 1940s,Xiao Hong,the famous woman writer of our country,wrote the full-length novel Hu Lan He Zhuan.This novel mainly narrates Hulan people's daily life.There are no dominating characters and minor characters in this novel.The author's pen is like a camera which records events happening in Hulan county and in the house of Xiao Hong's family.Hulan people are described as a group and all details of people's life in the northeast of China at that time are presented to readers.Howard Goldblatt took Xiao Hong as his object of study in his doctoral thesis.He also translated Hu Lan He Zhuan into English successfully.This thesis takes the image-shaping of Hulan people in Hu Lan He Zhuan and its translation as the object of study.By analyzing and comparing the way of image-shaping in the source text and in the target text,Howard Goldblatt's translation of Hu Lan He Zhuan is commented.As one of three sub-systems of appraisal theory,engagement system studies sources of attitudes.Based on engagement system,this thesis studies and compares sources of voices of Hulan people's image in the source text and in the target text so as to analyze and compare the way of image-shaping in the source text and in the target text through analyzing engagement resources.The following conclusion is reached.At first,most engagement resources in the source text are remained in the target text,so Hulan people's image is shaped in the same way.Hulan people's image is presented as effectively as in the source text.Then,a small number of monogloss resources are changed into heterogloss resources,so Hulan people's words and thoughts,the opposite voices that are not supported by Xiao Hong,alternative voices and readers' voices are involved.The way of Hulan people's image-shaping changes from Xiao Hong's own voices to all kinds of voices.Hulan people's image is presented lore effectively than in the source text.At last,a small number of heterogloss resources are changed into monogloss resources,so Hulan people's words and thoughts,the opposite voices that are not supported by Xiao Hong,alternative voices and readers' voices are excluded and there are only Xiao Hong's voices left.The way of Hulan people's image-shaping changes from all kinds of voices to Xiao Hong's own voices.Hulan people's image is presented Iess effectively than in the source text.Although a few transitions from heterogloss to monogloss make Hulan people's image-shaping less effective,preservation of most engagement resources and a few transitions from monogloss to heterogloss ensure that Hulan people's image-shaping is as effective as or more effective than in the source text.On the whole,the target text conveys Hulan people's image in the source text successfully.
