The past few years have witnessed the in-depth and continuous studies conducted in the flied of applied linguistics and interdisciplinary in particular, and genre and genre analysis thus have increasingly come to be one of the most prevalent topics, which deserves our close attention both at home and abroad.Abstract,as is known to us all, plays an essential role in academic papers and undeniably it is the essence of the whole paper, and therefore it is unwise to pay less attention to this part.According to the previous studies,a great number of research launched mainly have centered on the introduction of the master's thesis, science and engineering papers, literature review as well as research conclusion and so forth Regarding to the linguistic features, tense, voice and first person pronouns are all conspicuous research topics while less research have been extended on the comparison of the abstract in a certain type of journal, especially the comparative study of Chinese and foreign journal abstracts in the field of applied linguistics.Under such circumstances, therefore, this paper seeks to make a comparison between Chinese and international scholars, aiming to answer the following three questions:Firstly, what's the generic genre structure of abstracts in applied linguistics journals written by Chinese and foreign scholars?Secondly, what are the similarities and differences between them in terms of the move-step structures?Thirdly, what are the characteristics of shell nouns between those two corpora?Armed with C-A-R-S model proposed by Swales(1990)as well as Santo's five-move analysis models, this paper randomly selected a total of 80 RA abstracts from four core journals respectively in the field of applied linguistics, and each journal contains 10 abstracts ranging from the year 2016 to 2018.After analyzing the move-step structures, the research will be conducted with the aid of Antconc and WordSmith tools. In the light of a systemic and extensive genre analysis, the results have indicated that:there is a six-move analysis framework unique to this area called BIMRD,in which the capitalized letter(B)symbolizes "Research Background',(I)"Research Introduction"(M)Research Methods and Procedure",(R)" results presentation",(D)"Research discussion " and "Making a Conclusion(C)".In the interim, regarding to the genre structure, the frequency of background move and method move employed by Chinese scholars is much higher than it occurs in foreign journals, totally twice of that kind:In terms of method move, both Chinese and foreign scholars have a preference to use step 5+step 6 and a mixed "S+X" move:with regard to the result move,Chinese scholars are more inclined to offer evaluations and suggestions for future studies while foreign scholars prefer to provide evaluations only.Additionally, interesting phenomena of cyclical moves together with move/step combination in two sets are noticeable features as well. From the shell noun's point of view, the results could be interpreted as:Chinese scholars are apt to use introductory and result shell nouns, while foreign scholars are more keen on adopting method nouns to elaborate experimental methods, and the frequency of using clauses and complex sentences is much higher than those of Chinese scholars. These majors findings are likely to widen and deepen the scope of genre theory and its application in the flied of applied linguistics and also shed some light on academic writing instruction for further studies as well.Based on the results, some valuable insights and implications are worth mentioning here. From the pedagogical point of view,as for teachers, much attention should be paid to further cultivate students' genre awareness in thesis writing so as to help them to write in a more appropriate and pertinent way.Meanwhile, some ideas about how to write a high-level academic paper should be taken into consideration.Only bearing such writing differences in mind could scholars come out prestigious and praiseworthy works or articles.
