In exchanges and integration of Chinese and foreign culture, translation of literary works has played an important role.As a unique genre of literature,a novel is charming with its own characters'dialogues. As a vital part of a novel, dialogues is the most effective way to depict characters.Protagonist is a novel of Chen Yan,a Shaanxi playwright. This book won the third Shi Naian Literary Award on October,19~thh in 2018.Before translating the novel, the translator made full preparation to know about the novel and the author comprehensively. This novel is divided into three big parts. The translator chose Chapter One-Seven in Volume Two to translate. In selected translation part, characters'dialogues takes up a lot, which is of great value to research. Therefore, this C-E translation report shows the translation of characters'dialogues. In order to better show characters in the source text to the target text readers, the translator read carefully translation theories, mainly including equivalent effect and conversational implicature, and she applied them to the translation of dialogues in Protagonist.Through the translation analysis of dialogues,it can be seen that these dialogues literally show character identity, personality, social status, etc, with multiple meanings. This report gives an analysis of how to show the conversational implicature and achieve the equivalent effect in the target text. This report discusses the translation of characters'dialogues in the novel from perspectives of equivalent effect and conversational implicature, which provide a relatively new guiding method for translators. In order to achieve the equivalent effect in the target language, some translation strategies could be adopted.Generally speaking,as for simple characters'dialogues, syntactic structures and discourse structures without culture-loaded words and rhetoric, they can conform to the original structures, using literal translation. In the case of words or content with rich cultural and special meanings, the translator should try her best to choose appropriate translation strategies to translate on the basis of reproducing the original text, such as literal translation, interpretation, free translation, omission, amplification and annotation, and these strategies will be effective in the translation practice.
