As a means of testing and evaluating teaching and learning achievements, language testing plays an important role in English teaching in high schools. In recent years, more and more researchers at home and abroad have begun to pay attention to the effect of English test on teaching and learning, and have proved relevant theories and viewpoints through empirical research. However, many researchers focus on the effects of washback effect on NMET,CET-4,CET-6,IELTS,TOEFL and other large-scale exams, while ignoring school-based tests which closely related to daily learning.Combining with the related research results of washback effect at home and abroad, this study picks up 9 high schools from 3 different kinds cities in Sichuan province, chooses 50 teachers and 450 students as the research objectives, adopts questionnaire, classroom observation and individual interview as three investigation methods, discusses the washback effect of English school-based testing for English teaching and learning, and analyses the distinctions of the washback effect between different schools.According to the relevant data of this study, the school-based English test has a great influence on the teaching and learning of high school English, and this influence exists in all of the schools in three types cities. On the whole, the positive washback effect is greater than the negative washback effect.Compared with large scale tests,school-based tests have prominent advantages, such as more timely feedback, which can help teachers and students adjust teaching and learning methods and strategies more quickly.Of course,school-based test also has some shortcomings, such as teachers and students do not pay enough attention to school-based test,so the test results can not truly reflect the level of students.Besides, too frequent school-based test will increase the pressure of students,so that in large test play abnormal. Therefore, based on the above conclusions, the author suggests that the school should pay more attention to the school-based test, improve the quality of school-based test, improve the organization and management of school-based test,so as to give greater play to the role of school-based test in promoting English teaching and learning.
