A Study On The Influence Factors For The English Translation Effect Of Traditional Chinese Sci-tech Classics

The Chinese translation translators have been conducting researches on the translation of the traditional Chinese classics for more than 100 years,however,a systematic study on the English translation of traditional Chinese sci-tech classics just started in recent years.Therefore,the study on the influence factors for the English translation effect of traditional Chinese sci-tech classics will enable the rest of the world to better understand the traditional Chinese culture.The present study,a qualitative and quantitative research in nature,intends to employ the communication theory to explore the English translation effect of traditional Chinese sci-tech classics,with Tian Gong Kai Wu,The Art of War and The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine,three traditional Chinese sci-tech classics,as the case study.The author attempts to use the communication theory to explore the influence factors of the English translation effect of traditional Chinese sci-tech classics.The author of this thesis holds the view that the English translation effect depends on the following four parts,namely the"cultural transmitter(who translates),the contents of transmission(what to translate and what translation strategies to use),the approach(translate and publish in which channel)and the target readers(for whom)".Meanwhile,the linguistic theory of multimodal discourse analysis is applied in the present research to elaborate on how the the multimodal translation strategies and multimodal publication and book circulation strategies can be best used for a better English translation effect of traditional Chinese sci-tech classics.The research results of the English translation effect is achieved by the well-coordinated functioning of the four influence factors.The ideal "cultural transmitter" for a better English translation effect of traditional Chinese sci-tech classics should be the "team translators",that is,cooperative "team translators" composed of the native Chinese translators and/or publishing houses,and the western translators and/or publishing houses should be studied;"the contents of transmission" should be focused on the study of the selection of the source texts,and the application of multimodal translation strategies;the study of "the approach"should be focused on the multimodal publication and circulation of the target texts;the study of "the target readers" should be focused on the role of target readers in the translation effect of traditional Chinese sci-tech classics,and on how to meet the reading needs of diversified target readers in the e-reading era based on their reading habits;It is hoped that the present research can shed light on the holistic English translation studies of traditional Chinese classics both theoretically and practically,and is also conducive to the globalization of the traditional Chinese culture.
