Hermeneutics is a discipline and methodology about meaning,understanding and interpretation.The central task of all translation activities is to understand and explain the original text.Hermeneutics and translation,therefore,have a natural essential relationship.The theoretical and practical significance of hermeneutics applied to translation studies should not be underestimated.Before the 1970s,traditional translation studies focused on the original language,emphasizing the sacred value and status of the original text,while the translation was regarded as a pure form of text conversion,and the translator was forced to "stealth".After the 1970s,with the development of translation studies,translation theory showed a diversified trend,and there was a "cultural turn",which formed different translation schools.The hermeneutic translation theory affirms the translator's subjective initiative and creativity in translation activities,and pushes the translator from behind the scenes to the front.British scholar George Steiner divides translation activities into four steps in the interpretation of translation theory:"trust","aggression","incorporation" and"compensation".First of all,the translator's first step is "trust",which believes that the works to be translated have the value of translation.The second step is intrusion.Although the process is very violent,it has a positive effect.The third step is absorption.Its purpose is to absorb,which is the stage of expression after understanding.The third step is the core of the entire translation aotivity.The fourth step is compensation.Restore the energy flowing out of the original text to achieve balance and fairness.This report analyzes the Chinese translation of The End of the Money under the guidance of hermeneutic translation theory.Based on the four steps,this report analyzes the Chinese translation in combination with specific cases.This report introduces the background of the report from the theoretical and practical aspects,and analyzes the linguistic features of the original text from the three characteristics of lexical,syntax and discourse.Under the guidance of George Steiner's theory,the combination of four steps of translation and text translation will be analyzed.including the aggression of the original text from the sentence and vocabulary levels and the absorption of the English nominal structure and the passive voice.Through compensation,the translator restores the energy balance of the original text and the translation.The End of the Money is translated under the guidance of heirneneutic translation theory,and the case study is compared between the.two translation methods with and without the guidance of hermeneutic translation theory.The results show that the theory of hermeneutic translation can restore the energy lost by translation and achieve the expressive effect of the source language.The translation,therefore,is more professional and practical.In addition,this translation practice also provides a good reference for Chinese translation of scientific texts.
