A Study On Political Discourse Translation From The Perspective Of China's International Image Building

China's international communication has gained momentum with the overseas promotion of the Chinese culture.However,the Western countries are still stronger than China in terms of the influence of the international public opinion.The image of China in the eyes of Westerners is a product of the Western ideology and discourse,which has deprived China of the right to build its own international image.This situation is destined to hinder the improvement of China's international influence and its international discourse power over the time.It is therefore a matter of urgency to enhance the building of China's international image.Political discourse bears witness and gives explanation to China's successful practice and great achievements in the course of revolution,construction and reform.It is also the core of the discourse content for international communication.The international communication of political discourse is thereby of great significance in the construction of a country's image.Taking the translation of China's political discourse as the research object,the author conducts a study on the selected versions of the translation of political documents and foreign media reports,such as Keywords to Understand China,Xi Jinping:The Governance of China,government work report,etc.The thesis probes into the relationship between political discourse translation and China's international image building by analyzing the status-quo of China's international image and the features of China's political discourse.The thesis borrows from the translation strategies proposed by Aixela for translating culture-specific items and combines the characteristics of China's political discourse to analyze the typical examples in the translation of China's political discourse.The thesis also summarizes five frequently-used translation strategies,which are free translation,intratextual gloss,extratextual gloss,deletion and literal translation,to elaborate on the selection of strategies for the translation of Chinese political terms and their effects so as to shed light on the translation of China's political discourse from a rather new perspective.The research on the strategies of translating China's political discourse should therefore focus on improving and enhancing the translation validity,making the political discourse comprehensible to the international audiences,boosting China's discourse power and building China's international image in a much more effective way.
