Among the translation studies in China, the translation for China's international communication is one of the least covered parts. This paper is aimed to make a systematic exposition on the theory and practice of the translation studies for China's international communication based on the actual work in China's international communication and in view of the ever-developing China's overall national strength, in the hopes of providing instructive reference for this important branch of translation studies that started late but deserves more research efforts. In recent years, the research on the translation for China's international communication seems to have become a"hot"research focus and there are already certain meaningful exploration and studies into it by some young and old experts and scholars. There is no denying that with the acceleration of multi-polarization and economic globalization, international communication is becoming more and more significant for any country. As the gateway to the outside world for a country to build its national image, its international communication is of vital importance to enhance its voice in the international community, in which process the translation plays a vital role. Though international communication is important and necessary for the fast-developing China, the existing large number of pitfalls and errors----be it in government-documents and speeches or in the non-governmental efforts, greatly hinders the communication effects and harms China's national image. The relatively backward research on the translation for China's international communication has, so to speak, lagged behind the need for China's overall strategy on international communication. Just in the light of the above, this paper attempts to probe into this translation research branch from the perspectives of the building and communications of China's national image and enhancing China's soft power competitiveness as well as put forward certain specific solutions so as to show the national image of China as"peaceful, developing, cooperative and harmonious"to the international community. This paper first analyses the concepts, status quo, tasks and characteristics of the translation for China's global communication. Then it points out the challenges and principles in it before listing the most important qualities expected of the translators in this field. By illustrations of a great variety of examples in the actual translation, this paper goes on by categorizing two major types of errors, namely,"intra-language mistakes"and"extra-language mistakes"and analyzing the causes. As one of the main parts of the research, this paper puts forward some translation strategies---both on the macro level, i.e. general strategies and in the micro sense, i.e. specific translation techniques. There can be little doubt that translation for China's international communication involves many aspects and only one paper can never cover all the translation strategies or techniques. However, the typical examples this paper selects and analyzes are sufficient to point to the core of this translation branch. Besides, this paper also points out the future development of the translation for China's international communication, concluding that effective translation is due to play a bigger role in the building, shaping and communication of China's national image of"being peaceful, developing, cooperative and harmonious".In terms of research methods, a combination of methods such as definition, analysis of concepts, case studies with real translation practices in China's global communication are adopted in this paper. As part of the traditional translation theory and practice studies, the translation for China's international communication is a relatively new area yet it bears its own uniqueness. Therefore this paper holds that it will attract more researchers to focus on it. For instance, the various intra-language and extra-language mistakes in it have drawn the attention of many experts from the linguistic and translation sectors. This paper calls on more people to join this research area to improve its research level, which not only carries significance in the national strategic policy but also pushes forward the further development of the more independent translation studies.
