As a practice report on English to Chinese translation with text,this report describes the task from Beyond: Our Future in Space authored by British astronomer Chris Impey,the book is an astronomical science book on the development of human space travel.In the selected chapters,the book's author introduces the SETI's efforts and achievements in the search for intelligent extraterrestrial civilizations.Through the translation of the scientific text,the author analyzes the difficulties and problems in the translation process,and discusses the corresponding translation strategies and solutions.In the background of the task,the author introduces the research significance and characteristics of the text.Based on the characteristics of scientific text,the translation task can be classified as the informative function text.Communicative translation is used to ensure the authenticity of the text.The author uses some translation strategies to analyze the translation task and lists some representative sentences as the part of the analysis of translation cases.In the chapter of case analysis,the author analyzes from two aspects: word and syntax,including terminology,specialized vocabulary,conversion,long sentences,passive sentences,non-restrictive relative clauses.Through the task description and analysis,the author firstly realized the importance of the professional knowledge to translation.Secondly,the utilization of translation strategies should be more flexible.Finally,the guidance of translation theory is crucial,in accordance with the text type theory,in the translation of informative function text,the translation needs to be rigorous and objective as well as more accord with the linguistic characteristics of the target language.
