The significance of reading has been fully reflected in the new curriculum reform.Reading can not only improve the level and ability of teachers to guide students to comprehensively use multilingual knowledge,but also effectively train students' ability to use English learning skills.However,at present,teachers focus on teaching comprehensive language knowledge to students in the process of English reading teaching.Students' comprehensive language learning skills are often not well cultivated,resulting in a deviation in their comprehensive language knowledge output ability.This study attempts to apply Scaffolding Instruction to senior middle school English reading teaching,for the purpose of promoting students' English reading performance and comprehensive reading ability.Scaffolding Instruction was proposed by the famous American educator Bruner,based on Vygotsky's "Zone of Proximal Development " and Constructivism Theory in the 1970 s.This teaching model means that when students encounter questions beyond their current cognition,teachers or peers will provide support and guidance to help them enter the situation smoothly,make independent exploration,carry out collaborative learning,and master and apply the knowledge,all of which contributes to students' completing the learning task independently.This study is based on Scaffolding Instruction and explores the significance and effect of its application in senior middle school English reading teaching.Three research questions are raised:(1)What is the impact of Scaffolding Instruction on the English reading test scores of senior middle school students?(2)What is the impact of Scaffolding Instruction on senior middle school students ' English reading strategies?(3)As for Scaffolding Instruction,what are the students' feedback and suggestions?This research is conducted in Huaihai Senior Middle School in Huaibei,Anhui Province since September 2019.The two class students in the first grade of senior middle school are the subjects of the experiment which lasted twelve weeks to obtain reliable data.The study uses SPSS 19.0 to discuss and analyze the data,aiming to deeply explore the significance of applying Scaffolding Instruction to senior middle school English reading teaching.The research shows Scaffolding Instruction can improve students' reading performance,encourage students to change their traditional English reading strategies,and eventually increase their interest in English reading.
