Reading teaching plays a crucial part in English teaching in junior high school. However,in terms of the English reading class in middle school in Urumqi, many teachers pay special attention to the vocabulary and grammar in the reading text. Therefore, under this teaching background,on the one hand, students lack guidance on language learning strategies, and their ability to extract information is insufficient. On the other, students’ learning interest is difficult to stimulate so that their learning enthusiasm is not high.By reading related literature, the author finds that the Scaffolding Instruction Model guided by Constructivism and the Zone of Proximal Development has been favored in recent years, and it is widely used in middle school English teaching.Scaffolding Instruction means that within the student’s ZPD,teachers give them a kind of temporary learning support to guide students from known to unknown development. With the improvement of students’ cognitive level, teachers gradually remove the support, and finally give the task of managing learning to the students. Two parallel classes of Grade nine in No.50 Middle School in Urumqi were selected by the author as the research subjects, one was an experimental class and the other was a controlled one.A four-month teaching experiment was conducted using the questionnaire, tests, the interview, and SPSS 17.0 for data collection and statistical analysis. The purpose is to apply the scaffolding instruction model to middle school English reading teaching to explore its effectiveness. After the experiment, the following conclusion is drawn that English reading teaching based on the scaffolding instruction model can effectively improve the English reading scores of students in the experimental class. At the same time, the research also finds that the scaffolding instruction model can arouse a majority of the students’ reading interest and foster their awareness of cooperative learning in EC.However, due to individual differences of learners, scaffolding instruction does not much helpful for a few students with poor vocabulary and grammar. But on the whole, this teaching method is effective. |
