This translation practice report focuses on the central modal verbs in the English text.Based on the research report on the Study of Emission Control and Energy Efficiency Measures for Ships in the Port Area, the research report mainly describes the drivers, barriers and implementation of waste gas emission and energy utilization in the port area.Through reading a large number of English maritime documents, the translator finds that the central modal verbs occur frequently in maritime English, expressing broad modal meanings, and reflecting the speaker's judgment on the possibility of things happening. Therefore, under the framework of quark grammar theory, this translation practice report makes an in-depth study on the Chinese translation of modal verbs in English maritime documents. The research finds that:1)the central modal verbs are divided into internal modality and external modality in maritime texts.2)the same modal verb may have both internal and external modal meanings.3)modal verbs express judgments about the likelihood of something happening, which are also divided into three levels:high, medium and low.4)the different tenses of the modal verbs express different possibility of things happening.5)compared with other registers, the Chinese translation of English maritime texts has different modal characteristics. Therefore, through the translation practice, the author hopes that the translation of modal verbs in English maritime texts will have some guiding significance.
