The Handmaid's Tale is the classic work written by Canadian writer Margaret Atwood. In 1986,Atwood won the Booker Prize nomination for The Handmaid's Tale;however, the book that made Atwood an international sensation has long been a rarity in China. In 2017,Hulu brought The Handmaid's Tale to the big screen, and many fans went to bookstores and libraries to buy or borrow the book after watching the adapted TV series. From a nameless figure to a heavyweight, this “handmaid” has traveled through China for nearly two decades. This paper will analyze the dissemination, reception, and translation of The Handmaid's Tale in China in the light of André Lefevere's Manipulation Theory. In 2017,with the popularity of the adapted TV series,The Handmaid's Tale came into view and caused an extensive discussion on the Internet in China. The author starts the research by analyzing responses from book reading websites and reading applications, the sales of The Handmaid's Tale on online bookstores, articles published on mainstream social media platforms, and related academic researches to expound the dissemination and reception of The Handmaid's Tale among professional and non-professional readers. Then, the author explores how ideology, poetics, and the translator manipulate the translated text in the translating process. From the aspect of ideology, the acceptance of Christianity in China, the awakening of female consciousness, and the regulation on the publishing industry are the main factors that influence the translation. From the perspective of poetics, the development of Chinses literature and Chinese translated literature are the driving forces that influence the final performance of The Handmaid's Tale.In terms of sponsors, the development of the Chinse publishing industry, the publishing strategy proposed by publishing houses, and the Canadian government's cultural policy may manipulate the translated work.Besides, the translator's perception of language and text also affects the translated work. The author compares the translated texts published in different areas or eras,or by different translators with the translator's translation philosophy to explore the translator's influence on the choice of words and sentences. The Handmaid's Tale has attracted the attention of many literary researchers in China, but few scholars have studied it from the perspective of translation. This dissertation can enrich related studies on Margaret Atwood in China. In addition, the Manipulation Theory needs voluminous case studies to test its feasibility.Taking The Handmaid's Tale as a case study can illuminate the intricate mechanism of the translating process and provide new materials for translation studies.
