The thesis aims to explore the process of translation manipulation from the perspective of culture, including choice of the original works, translator's strategy and publishing of the translation. The main translation theory applied in this thesis is Lefevere's translation manipulation theory. Detective fiction translation in the late Qing Dynasty and modern China will be discussed from three aspects: ideology, poetics and patronage.The thesis falls into four chapters:The first chapter reviews the history of Chinese and Western translation study and the development of detective fiction translation in China. Then it analyses movement of detective fiction translation in the light of polysystem theory (Even-Zohar). It also differentiates "translation poetics" from poetics in poetry by comparing "Norms" of Toury and "Poetics" of Lefevere.The second chapter discusses how ideology manipulates detective fiction translation.
