A Study Of The Chinese Translations Of The Snows Of Kilimanjaro

The Snows of Kilimanjaro,the representative short story by Ernest Miller Hemingway,contains concisely concentrated expressions and an abundance of symbols,whereby it is of greater complexity to translate it into Chinese,while there are numerous possibilities for transcultural translations.On the basis of previous research on the ideological artistic characteristics,the thesis,combined with related translation theories,is focused on 10 versions in Chinese to compare with the source texts in three aspects from the opening by the "the dried and frozen carcass of a leopard" in the summit,the complicated inner world of the protagonist Harry when he was dying to the conditions when he was confronted with the final doom.The thesis conducts a comparative study of the Chinese versions and the original texts to analyze how different versions present the scenes of demise and the advantages and disadvantages to the translations.In the first part,Introduction,narrated are the research focus,introductions of Chinese versions,the research ideology and literature review of studies on The Snows of Kilimanjaro's Chinese translation.Hemingway has long been applauded by attracted scholars for the setting of the demise.How the brief yet precisely profound language of art in the story would be presented in distinct versions in Chinese?How the discrepancies would be analyzed and interpreted?These are the questions that the thesis is intended to discuss.In the opening of the story,the "dried and frozen carcass of a leopard" in the summit brings in a scene filled with mysterious symbols,laying numerous questions and cliffhangers throughout the whole story.The short story depicts what Harry,who was dying of gangrene,saw and thought on the cot,he felt the death approaching,reflected on his whole life and deceased in the illusion toward the summit of the ice-covered mountain.All chains of thought in Harry's mind all direct to one issue,how to face death.The thesis is aimed to probe into how the symbolic situations of his demise could be conveyed through translation.The thesis is designed from three aspects:The first part is focused on the difference in Chinese and western cultural backgrounds.The two key images are discussed "the House of God" and "the dried and frozen carcass of a leopard" in the first paragraph to probe into the symbolic connotations whereupon effects of different interpretations and translations are compared and analyzed.Meanwhile,in so far as the opening paragraph sets a mysterious atmosphere and cliffhanger for the whole story,compared are different versions of the opening sentencesThe second part highlights the discrepant versions when Harry is confronted with the inevitable death.Above all,the translations are compared in terms of the significant detail from his consciousness "quarrel" to discuss the profound connotations as well as the complex feelings of Harry.Then,the contradiction of whether to write that Harry has been faced with is analyzed from two perspectives of his self-positioning and contemplation on himself.Key paragraphs are extracted so as to compare the effects of Harry's psychology from different versions and analyze the adopted translation strategies,the advantages as well as the disadvantages.The third part is concentrated on the analysis of how different versions present Harry's dying process.The images of "bastards","hyenas" and "bicycle policemen"in translated versions are analyzed.Then the situations of how Harry's inner world changed when the death was approaching depicted in different versions are discussed.Finally,artistic outcomes of different versions are compared in depicting Harry flying toward the top of Kilimanjaro in the illusion of deathIn the last part,conclusions of the thesis are drawn to provide a reference for translation of Hemingway's works as well as Chinese translations of other works in English literature,and provide a potential direction for further research.
