My thesis is to make a study of Hemingway's artistic features reflected in his works and how his personal experiences provide his central figures. There are three parts in it. I. Hemingway's early life and its great influence on his works. We can find many traces of his early life in almost all his stories. 2. Hemingway's artistic features reflected in his works. Hemingway's succinct and lucid prose style exerted a powerful influence on American and British fiction in the 20th century. In striving to be as objective and honest as possible, Hemingway hit upon the device of describing a series of actions using short, simple sentences from which all comments or emotional rhetoric were eliminated. These sentences were composed largely of nouns and verbs, had few adjectives and adverbs, and relied on repetition and rhythm for much of their effect. The resulting terse, concentrated prose was concrete and unemotional yet was often resonant and capable of conveying great irony through understatement. Hemingway's use of dialogue was similarly fresh, simple, and natural-sounding. The influence of this style was felt worldwide wherever novels were written, particularly from the 1930s through the 1950s. 3. Hemingway's personal experiences provide his central figures. This thesis explores the life and the works of the author Ernest Hemingway, and how his art was a direct result of his life. Hemingway's narrative style, character structure and common themes are also examined. Hemingway's life style - four marriages, bullfighting, deep-sea fishing, big-game hunting, and participation in World War I, the Spanish civil war, and World War II - made him the darling of reporters. And these richexperiences are reflected in almost all his works. As we know, Hemingway's works still interest most people and have a great influence on the literature world. His artistic technique has been still exerting influence on contemporary writers. So such a study helps to have a better appreciation of Hemingway's artistic charm and a better comprehension of Hemingway and his works.
