A Study On E-C Translation Of Fantasy Literature From The Perspective Of Toury's Translational Norms

As the HBO series Game of Thrones became a hit in China,its original fantasy fiction A Song of Ice and Fire also grew popular,reaping a large number of fantasy lovers and series fans.Currently,fantasy literature only occupies a niche market in China,and the majority of it are books translated from English.But not many researches are done in the field of fantasy literature translation,especially descriptive study.This paper studies the translation of A Song of Ice and Fire:A Game of Thrones from a descriptive perspective.On the basis of the book and its Chinese translation,the paper intends to find out the norms governing the translation activity from the perspective of Gideon Toury's theory of translational normsThis paper uses Toury's theory to analyze the textual characteristics of the Chinese translation through quantitative and qualitive methods in an attempt to find out the underlying translational norms.The author found that different norms influenced the two translators,Tan Guangglei and Qu Chang,in the translation process.Initial norms are defined by the choice of source text.Several factors influenced the translators' choice:their personal experience and interests,social background in the early 2000s,and the publisher's support.Operational norms are choices made by translators in translation process.In translating place names and names of magical creatures,they used literal translation,transliteration and visualization.They also adopted parallels,four-character structure and other idiomatic Chinese expressions to formulate a relatively classical Chinese writing style.Initial norms are the orientation towards "adequacy" and "acceptability",and it can be demonstrated that the overarching translation strategy is closer to the "acceptable" end.This study is a supplement to Chinese translation of fantasy literature,and hopefully it can provide insights for future translators and translation studies.
