A Corpus-based Study On Lexical Patterns Of E-C Simultaneous Interpreting Of Chinese Addresses In UNGA General Debates

The advancement of computing technology has enabled the collection and analysis of real translation texts with high efficiency and on a large scale.Corpus-based translation studies(CTS),therefore,has gained popularity during this process.Study of lexical patterns is an important field of CTS.With CTS methodology,this thesis uses China's addresses and their English interpreting version at UNGA General Debate to study their lexical patterns so as to provide a better understanding of lexical patterns of English simultaneous interpreting of Chinese texts.The author firstly builds two corpora:the Chinese-English Parallel Corpus of China's Addresses in UNGA General Debates,consisting of original Chinese texts and English interpreting texts of Chinese leader's addresses from the 60th to 74th sessions of General Debate;and the Corpus of Original United Kingdom's Addresses in UNGA General Debates,comprising speeches given by British leaders during the same sessions.Then,with the aid of CTS tools such as WordSmith Tools and BFSU PowerConc,the research compares six indicators of lexical patterns in these two corpora.It is found that indicators including type/token ratio and standardized type/token ratio,mean sentence length,and high frequency word show the same patterns as Laviosa's study on translated language,confirming the hypothesis of simplification;while in terms of lexical density,mean word length,and nominalisation,simplification cannot be verified.Since few of current corpus-based studies on lexical patterns focus on interpreted texts,this study deepens understanding of lexical patterns of simultaneous interpreting of the Chinese language into English as well as of the hypothesis of simplification;and the study can also give guidance to interpreting practice and training.
