The thesis employs the Ethical Literary Criticism to deconstruct ethical relationships and conflicts in the novel Shanghai Dancing. The analysis is conducted from three aspects:survival ethics, family ethics and social ethics so as to interpret diversification of ethical relationships and conflicts. The research starts from general ethics and finds that each choice people make is the most suitable one according to their comprehension and cognition and they are prepared to take the consequences brought by their choices. The Ethical Literary Criticism study on Shanghai Dancing concludes that:(1)Survival ethics differs in terms of personality and occasion. In the text, the protagonist, his father, brother and girlfriend react diametrically opposed to the issue of survival-leading whether to death or to life imply past life and ethical cognition.Ethical Literary Criticism seizes these objects to reveal history and diversification of survival ethics.(2)Wars in modern time ruins most traditional families and leaves survivors no alternatives but to re-frame the family structure. The family serves no longer as a household filled with love, making the protagonist a man with impaired social interaction. The transmission of society raises crisis of family ethics in the next generations and the distorted cognition following the crisis impacts the society in reverse.(3)Specific ethics of interaction in peacetime prefers richer ones with higher social status to the poor, constituting a hierarchical society.New social ethics emerges only when wars leave everyone the same identity-captives in interment camps. The emerging ethics is of aloofness, submission and rancor toward anyone who wants to make a difference.Although it has withered with the war,its transient existence reveals potentials for transmissions of social ethics in specific historical periods. This study is helpful to explore the ethical changes in modern literature and society.
