| Motion is ubiquitous and the basic state of the world.Lexicalization of motion verbs has received wide attention in the research field of motion event.Based on Talmy’s lexicalization pattern and motion event typology(MET),with the support of corpus from authoritative dictionaries of each language and an experimental test, this study attempts to typologically analyze English,Chinese and Uyghur run verbs(ECURVs)from the perspective of the semantic components and lexicalization patterns. This research aims to explore their similarities and differences, rank the lexicalization degree of these three languages as well as discuss the motivations behind the similarities and dissimilarities. This research finds:(1)in terms of core semantic components, the accessible specific verbs expressing quick movements in each language are different.Besides sharing "run"/"walk/move quickly",English uses "rush"/"go quickly";frequencies of these specific verbs are distinct in English,Chinese and Uyghur(ECU).In Uyghur,"run" is employed less than "walk/move quickly" to express the quick movement, while in English and Chinese, the case is opposite. As for peripheral semantic components, the quantities and types of them in each language are different.Even the same peripheral semantic component presents distinctive percentages and specific contents in each language, especially the Direction,Figure and Gesture. In addition,a run verb conflates three peripheral semantic components at most;(2)in terms of run verbs, the lexicalization degree of these languages is not the same and ranks as English>Chinese>Uyghur;(3)the lexicalization pattern of ECURVs is "motion+manner+X"(0≤X≤3),among which "motion+manner";is shared and X ranges from Figure,Direction,Gesture,Time,Mood,Aim,Location and Tool, while in English and Chinese X has the options of Distance and Cause and in Chinese it also can be Situation. The frequency of these 11 elements in the lexicalization patterns is ranked as follows:Direction>Gesture>Aim>Figure>Location>Time>Tool=Mood>Cause>Distance=Situation. In the light of the quantity of X,lexicalization patterns of these run verbs in each language are divided into four groups, among them"motion+manner+Xi”and "motion+manner+X1+X2" are the main ones. Moreover,"motion+manner+direction" and "motion+manner-gesture" are shared as among top three lexicalization patterns.Furthermore, these universals can be excavated by basic level categorization and the ease of cognitive processing. For particulars ECU reveal this research appeals to windowing of attention and language system. The present study,on the one hand, supports findings put forward by previous studies.Specifically,it verifies Luo’s(2007)revisionary version on Talmyan lexicalization pattern of motion verbs in English and Chinese is also applicable to run verbs and examines Xue’s(2013)viewpoint that Chinese and Uyghur manner motion verbs have "motion+manner" in common as to lexicalization pattern. On the other hand, this research futhers our understanding of ECU and enriches the research language type in motion event as well as provides guides for trilingual teaching in Xinjiang. |
