| The process of ending the psychological counseling includes elements such as separation,farewell,and completion.These elements are both opportunities and challenges for counseling work.And in recent years,the demand for psychological counseling of domestic college students is increasing sharply.Taking advantage of the termination phase to consolidate and continue the counseling gains of the clients is an important way to improve the efficiency of college counseling.However,the academic pays little attention to the termination phase and lacks empirical research.This research aims to explore the behaviors of counselors and the perspectives of the clients in the termination phase,so as to provide some empirical evidence for the practical work.This study contains two qualitative studies.Study I takes 16 complete counseling cases as the research object,analyzes and summarizes the counselors’ termination behaviors in the actual counseling;Study 2 takes 15 clients who have just experienced termination as the research object and discusses what the counselors did in the termination phase from the perspective of the clients and the clients’ feelings and expectations for termination.Both studies use Consensus Qualitative Research method to analyze the materials.Comparing the results of the two studies can draw the following conclusions and make suggestions for practical work:(1)The behaviors of college psychological counselors mainly include consulting about termination,leading to completion,checking and consolidating the effects,discussing the future,and dealing with separation.(2)The feelings of college students in the termination are diverse;The things that are helpful in the termination phase are mainly the possibility for continuing the counseling in the future,the summary and suggestions by counselors,counselors to promote the client to face the problem,the encouragement and recognition of counselors,and the dissatisfaction is about hastily ended cases,passively ended cases,insufficient help,no sense of ritual;Expectations and suggestions for termination include the counselor’s suggestions,a transitional end,review and summary,the counselor’s evaluation,and a sense of ceremony;Clients’ understandings of termination mainly conform to the transition model,and a few conform to the loss model.(3)The degree to which the psychological counselors of the university attach importance to the termination phase and behaviors is not fully meet the psychological needs of the college students.(4)The regulations on the number of counseling meetings by the Psychological Center of the university have an impact on the process of putting forward and determining the ending,the behavior of the counselors,and the sense of ritual of termination.(5)It is recommended that college counselors attach importance to the role of the termination phase,increase the use of termination behaviors,and respond to the impact of the number of times prescribed for the termination phase by structuring the termination matters in advance and consulting with the clients,proactively discussing the reasons for termination,and perceiving "leading to completion" behavior and its motivation,add retrospective summary,discuss the future,deal with separation,attach importance to the process of farewell. |
