Literary exchange takes an irreplaceable position in cultural exchange. As cultural exchanges further develop, literary translation has been playing an increasingly crucial role in promoting the literary exchange and cultural sharing between different countries. At present, there is no lack of studies concerning literary translation, however,in these studies the transfer of "style",the spiritual marker of each writer or work, has been given little attention, and the translation of the "black humor" style has received even less attention. In view of this,it is rather necessary as well as innovative to carry out the study on black humor translation.Based on Adaptation Theory by Jef Verschueren, this thesis attempts to discuss and analyze, from the perspective of "dynamics of adaptation",the handling of Wang Xiaobo's "black humor" style in linguistic form using examples from the present author's translation practice of Wang,s essay collection Yizhi Teli Duxing De Zhu(A Maverick Pig). The thesis starts with a brief introduction to the research background, task profile, significance of the study and thesis structure. After that, the author offers a brief on the preparation before translating, translating process and post-translating work, with the analysis of the commonly used black humor devices in Wang Xiaobo's essays, the analysis of essays selected for translation and its black humor, and the adaptations needed in translating the black humor based on its communicative effect as the focus.Next, the author introduces Verschueren's Adaptation Theory which mainly involves its three properties of language and four angles of investigation. In the following body part, based on the core value "dynamics of adaptation" of the Adaptation Theory, the author explores the translation methods of those commonly found black humor devices such as allegory, verbal irony and so on during her translating process through a case study. The present research shows that a translator can largely fulfill the conveyance of the black humor through his flexible adaptations.Usually the original black humor can be conveyed with the help of passive adaptations, represented by literal translation method;active adaptations, represented by methods like liberal translation and imitation may also be employed when passive adaptations fail.It is hoped that this study may throw some insights into future relevant studies on black humor translation, and offer some references for the handling of black humor in translation practice.
