A Report On The E-C Translation Of Reading The Plans:The Architectural Drawings In Umberto Eco’s The Name Of The Rose From The Perspective Of Translation Compensation

The report is based on the translation practice of the literary study of Reading the Plans:The Architectural Drawings in Umberto Eco’s The Name of the Rose.From the perspective of architectural drawings,the study interprets the profound signs in the novel The Name of the Rose,reflecting the inherent contradiction between education and religion in medieval monasteries and indicating the collapse of medieval belief under the impact of modern thoughts.As the study is a typical informative text with a novel viewpoint and a distinct structure,more attention should be paid to the authenticity and accuracy of the translation according to Newmark’s translation theories on text typology and the translation compensation theory is employed to compensate for the missing information in the translation process.Both Chinese and Western scholars have researched the theories of translation compensation,but relevant research in China lagged behind until the 1980s.For this translation project,Xia Tingde’s translation compensation theory is selected as the guidance,which aims to repair or compensate for the losses in the translation process according to the text function and translation purpose while conforming to the rules and norms of the target language.According to the theory,the report divides translation compensation into three levels:lexical compensation,grammatical compensation and textual compensation,and selects typical examples in the translation to discuss the losses and compensation methods at different levels.This translation practice provides a new perspective for the study on multiple symbolic meanings in the novel The Name of he Rose in the target language culture,and offers a means to the target readers to further appreciate the art of fiction and the power of word of the novel.In addition,the translation text dissects the beliefs and culture of the Middle Ages in Europe,strengthens the target readers’ understanding of western culture,and promotes the cultural exchanges between China and the west,so it has great practical significance.In this report,the translator expounds the preparation before translation,the translation in progress and difficulties and solutions during the translation.Besides,some practical translation experience is summed up and the deficiency of knowledge and translation skills is mentioned in the report,in order to provide reference for other translators.
