The Influence Of Face-Voice Gender Stereotype Expectancy On Impression Evaluation

Both face and voice are important clues for impression evaluation,and their most significant physiological characteristics are gender.With the accumulation of social experience,people have formed the gender stereotype expectancy of face and voice,which may have an impact on impression evaluation.The presentation order of information has always been an important variable in social psychological research and has been shown to affect people's cognitive outcomes.Based on previous researches,the present research first selects the male faces and voices with high masculinity and the female faces and voices with high femininity as experimental materials through the preliminary study.Then three studies examine the existence of gender stereotype expectancy in face and voice,and explore the influence of face-voice gender stereotype expectancy on impression evaluation under different presentation orders.Study 1 tests the existence of face-voice gender stereotype expectancy by crossmodal priming paradigm.Results show that for both men and women,when the present face and voice are of the same gender,their response time of gender judgment is shorter,which means the face-voice gender stereotype expectancy is widely held.Study 2 and Study 3 investigated the influence of face-voice gender stereotype expectancy on impression evaluation by using two sequence presentation evaluation tasks(face before voice and voice before face)and a simultaneous presentation evaluation task.Results turns out that in most cases,the individuals who meet the face-voice gender stereotype expectancy are better evaluated in the dimension of warmth and competence,while the effect of this expectaty on the evaluation of individual impression of male face is more unstable,and when the face and voice are presented simultaneously,this expectancy only affects the evaluation of competence.The comparative analysis of different types of individuals shows that people pay more attention to face gender information in impression evaluation,and women faces can significantly improve the evaluation.The main conclusions of this study are as follows:(1)People generally hold face-voice gender stereotype expectancy.(2)On the whole,the individuals who violate face-voice gender stereotype expectancy get lower impression evaluation.Face gender information is more valued when making assessment and women face can significantly improve the evaluation.
