Who is Irish?is a collection of short stories published by Gish Jen in 1999,which gathers eight short stories, such as "Birthmates","Duncan in China","In the American Society".All of these short stories take Chinese as narrative subjects, and also point to the cross-cultural integration between China and the United States.Gish Jen's identity runs through her literary creation.Identity is the core theme of Gish Jen's writing. This concept not only refers to one person's ethnic belonging but also includes all aspects of one person's existence in society. In today's multi-cultural background, she holds a tolerant attitude towards the identity of mainstream culture and the ethnic identity of Chinese Americans, and believes that she should not forget the roots of China but also identify with American identity. At the same time, the author understands that from the late 1980s,Stuart Hall analyzed the changes brought about by globalization, and his perspective of cultural research also shifted, seeking the same in the difference, and introducing "diaspora discourse" into the thinking of cultural identity related issues.Based on the theory of diaspora, this paper makes a textual analysis of the collection of the Who is Irish? This paper is divided into three parts:the first part is the introduction, which briefly describes the author and the text;the second part is the theoretical introduction, which is the theoretical basis for referring to the main body of the work;the third part is the main body of the work, which analyzes how the theory is reflected in the text, from the lack of identity to the construction of identity, then to the significance of the identity construction, and discusses the changes in the identity construction of the protagonist in the text. The conclusion of this paper is that the identity construction of Chinese Americans has been in a changing process, not only pursuing a culture completely but also establishing their own cultural identity of constructing cultural identity on the basis of not forgetting their roots, the author hopes to understand the significance of constructing cultural identity through analysis.
