The Remains of the Day is one of Kazuo Ishiguro's famous works. The author is a Japanese-born British writer who won the 2017 Nobel Prize in literature. The novel mainly tells the story of British butler Stevens at the suggestion of new employer to carry out the six-day trip.Stevens takes the form of a diary to record things in the journey,at the same time, continuously recall something happened in the past.In his current tour,Stevens travels through the southwest counties, taking in the country's distinctive countryside and welcoming social environment. In retrospect,Stevens recounts the unfair terms of the Versailles Contract and the events that led to the meeting between the German ambassador and the British prime minister in1936.The author breaks the traditional linear space-time structure, making the past and the present intertwined in an intricate way.The narrative time mainly adopts sequence and flashback, and the chaotic sequence caused by it is sorted out smoothly through Stevens' current travel time junction. In terms of space,Stevens seeks the ownership of body and mind in the space of life and the space of wilderness. In the social space, the butler is oppressed by the upper aristocracy. With the decline of Darlington hall,Stevens' achievements in works was destructed and he reflects on himself and finds his true self. The novel is set in July 1956,while the protagonist's memory goes back to the1920 s and 1930 s in Britain. The novel is narrated by the first person. In the first person narration, the narrator and the narrated have the same identity, and the narrators' narration has the reliability. The narrator "I" locates the identity in two aspects: the empirical self and the narrative self.During the thirty years, the British Empire declined in power and status in the world. The Darlington Hall changes the owner and the butler loss the glory. When the narrator is the first person narrator, the protagonist introduces the steward profession of private space into the international affairs of public space to highlight the glory of profession. He often conceals the true attitude and behavior of himself and employer in big events. The first person narration changes into unreliable narration. In this kind of hiding and lying to show the "butler" identity,Stevens fall into his responsibility and emotional of rational conflict and choice, comfort and guilt.Stevens seek "great butler" and "British dignity" is not only for protecting the dignity of the profession, but also for a confirmation of his identity. He treats thiswork with intellect and emotion, which is contained in the embodiment of the British National identity. His travel and memories are also intended to recreate the glories of a traditional Britain, and to recreate national identity through the countryside.Under the influence of imperialism,Lord Darlington and Stevens became the tragic figures of the gentleman tradition. Now Lord Darlington was replaced by the new employer,Stevens still stay for new employer. He still explores changes, which is a symbol of British culture and American culture in the conflict.Stevens is in the edge state of two countries. He needs to find identity construction. It also suggests that Britain should adapt to the changing times and become an inclusive country.Ishiguro is an immigrant writer, who is under the influence of the two countries. In the late 1980 s,he composed the work is not to show British culture identity and naturalized, but through to the analysis of British culture, from the perspective of the identity theory to seek new cross. He makes the theme of the works to the universal human nature angle of view, and found to the readers a positive attitude in the reconstruction of identity.
