As the beginning of Lyric Ballads,The Rime of the Ancient Mariner also represents the beginning of English romantic literature and is a work with a large amount of significance. The author,Coleridge, has the dual identity of both poet and critic. As a poet, his work are few in numbers, but each one is extremely romantic. As a critic, his critical theory is highly regarded by western critics. For many years,Coleridge has been suffering from illness and can only relieve the pain by taking opium.Critics therefore attribute the direct source of romantic fantasy in his poems to the illusion of taking opium. After being influenced by German classical philosophy,Coleridge made a systematic discussion and analysis on the basis of his predecessors' research on imagination, finally formed a mature critical system, the principle of imagination.Coleridge's principle of imagination emphasizes the importance of imagination and distinguishes it from fantasy. However, the most important and creative principles he had put forward on that basis were the primary imagination and the secondary imagination. This paper mainly uses the primary imagination and the secondary imagination of the principle of imagination to analyze and interpret the text of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, which is divided into four chapters:The first chapter discusses the origin and the formation of Coleridge's principle of imagination. His principle of imagination first originated from the enlightenment movement of English literature, then was influenced by German classical philosophy during his study tour, and finally became the principle of imagination of the present.Under the influence of philosophers such as Kant and Schelling,Coleridge's principle of imagination is filled with the color of rationalism. Therefore,Coleridge put forward the concept of primary imagination and secondary imagination and discussed it.His argument includes the distinction between the two and the joint functions they perform in poetry creation and the analysis of works. The second chapter is to explain and analyze the wired encounters of the ancient mariner and the fleet in the poem. Then use the principle of primary imagination toanalyze the plot and images in this poem.Analyze the world created by the poet and the experience he gave the protagonist from the perspective of the primary imagination. Then from the perspective of the secondary imagination to analyze the meaning behind his encounter, and thus the realistic meaning of the work is visible, that is,human beings should love nature. The third chapter analyzes the ancient mariner's mental journey in this story. From the perspective of the primary imagination,it can be unscrambled that the psychological process of the ancient mariner in the whole story encounter, the mental torture he suffered in the process of confession.Through the second principle of imagination, his spiritual world and the second meaning behind this story can be concluded that man should have belief.Belief is the driving force and direction that leads people forward.Chapter four explores the theme of the poem by analyzing the combination of the primary imagination and the secondary imagination.Through the experience and the course of the ancient mariner's reality and his spiritual world,it can be seen that the mariner created by the author is a hero with belief in his heart. After suffering and repentance,he finally understood what he believed in,that is,he should love nature and all things. This is also the idea that the author wants to pass on to us through the poem.Under the guidance of Coleridge's principle of imagination, this thesis carries on the understanding and analysis of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.Through the poet's description, the protagonist of this poem can be regarded as an image of an old sailor who has belief in his heart, and his belief is to love nature.Combined with Coleridge's principle of imagination,it can be analyzed and concluded that the relationship between the earthly world and the spiritual world in poetry is that the two influence each other and finally reach a unified state through adjustment. The interpretation of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner on the basis of Coleridge's imagination principle reveals the relationship between the earthly world and the spiritual world and provides a new perspective for exploring the ideological connotation of Coleridge's works.
