Vocabulary is the cornerstone of English learning;students' vocabulary learning effect directly affects students' English learning effect. But in traditional English teaching, teachers often use vocabulary as a special teaching content and generally explain all new words in the text before teaching the text.Experts and scholars at home and abroad have begun to attach importance to English vocabulary teaching for a long time, and put forward the method of integrating English songs into English vocabulary teaching. However, most of the discussions in this area just stay at the theoretical aspect;and there are few studies with strong maneuverability.Language input is a prerequisite for language acquisition. It is particularly important for teachers to make sure whether the language input can provide students with a better opportunity to broaden vocabulary breadth and deepen vocabulary depth.Word recurrence,as a significant factor to affect vocabulary acquisition, has also been favored by many scholars, but there is little study on the combination of word recurrence and English songs. This paper aims to explore the effects of word recurrence in English songs on students' vocabulary acquisition in primary schools based on the relevant studies on English songs and vocabulary acquisition at home and abroad.Under the guidance of the theory of multiple intelligences and thenoticing hypothesis, this research mainly explores the following questions:1)What are the effects of word recurrence in English songs on primary school students' English vocabulary breadth?2)What are the effects of word recurrence in English songs on primary school students' English vocabulary depth? This study focused on 65 students in two classes in the fifth grade of a primary school in Changsha. One class was the experimental group and the other was the control group. There was a vocabulary test before and after the experiment. In the teaching experiment, the participants got access to two different kinds of instructions: the word recurrence in English songs-assisted instruction and the traditional English Picture Book-assisted instruction. After the experiment, data collection and statistical analysis were performed with SPSS25.0.Major findings of this study include:1)Word recurrence in English songs can effectively promote students' English vocabulary breadth. Before the experiment, the students' vocabulary in the experimental group and the control group were severely deficient. After the experiment, the vocabulary produced per unit of time by the students in the experimental group greatly increased.2)Word recurrence in English songs can effectively promote students' English vocabulary depth. Before the experiment, students in theexperimental group and the control group both had weakness in using vocabulary,After the experiment, the students in the experimental group mastered the common meaning and usage of some vocabulary.Due to the short experimental time and the limited sample, the conclusions of this study have certain limitations.Future studies should overcome these limitations and help teachers expand the application field of English songs in later vocabulary teaching.
