Vocabulary is one of the important parts in the English study of senior high school students since one's vocabulary range can decide one's grade.According to the current researches, senior high school students can utilize certain strategy to effectively improve their vocabulary learning,i.e.,conceptual strategy, metacognitive strategy, affective strategy and cognitive strategy. However, senior high school students can use more than one strategy in their vocabulary learning. The topic on how to carry out second language acquisition effectively is much of concern to foreign language teachers. There is an idea that holds that language is learned through extension. The author thinks that the‘Xu Theory'can explain the case in second language acquisition. Thus under the framework of Xu Theory, this thesis proposes that senior high school students should make use of the strategy of vocabulary learning by extension. In order to testify whether senior high school students can benefit from the strategy of vocabulary learning by extension,60 students in Taigu Senior High School,2~ndd grade are recruited as participants. They are divided into three groups,i.e.,Extension Group(Group I),Summary Group(Group II)and Learning-by-rote Group(Group III).It is found that students in Group I perform better in mastering words than Group II and III,which shows that extension can promote high school students'vocabulary learning. It is also found the students in Group II get higher grades than those in Group III,which clearly reflects that the difficulty of cognitive processing directly affects the effectiveness of cognitive processes. Therefore in the process of English teaching, teachers should not only pay attention to the context of English vocabulary use,but more importantly encourage the students to use vocabulary creatively.Extension after reading can not only improve students'ability of using words correctly, but also improve students'English writing skills. It is a strategy that serves many purposes. In recent years, many provinces have reformed the college entrance examination, and the summary writing has been included in the assessment, which will also become one of the most difficult points in preparing the college entrance examination for English. The author provides a new idea on how to cope with the English reform of the college entrance examination,i.e.,to train students with the task of extension after reading which is more difficult than the summary writing task since it can improve the overall English level of high school students, rather than improve their grades by letting students learn by rote.
