As the economic and social development, some commodities like crafts are becoming approachable. As is belong to S&T text, the manual is the best way to know about the craft. Most of the crafts are imported, which posts great importance in its localized oriented translation. The S&T texts possess features in aspects like vocabulary, sentences and structure;therefore,it is vital for translator to understand the text,to choose and apply translation strategies and skills accordingly. This translation report uses Small Craft owner's manual with 12,000 words as source text, and uses author's translation as the example, making summary and analyses. In the pretranslation phase, the analyses and summary of the difficulties that lie in this manual about the content, vocabulary, sentences and discourses are made. After referring books about S&T translation, the importance of the choice of translation theory to this S&T text translation reveals. The actual users of this manual are retailers and customers, and they have different requests of the manual's translation. Thus, their different requests should be satisfied during the localized oriented translation process. As one of the fundamental theories of localized oriented translation, translational action theory regards translation as a kind of activity, with participants of the initiator, the commissioner, the translator, the source-text producer and the target-text receiver and targettext user. Also,it is crucial that the translator should collect the information about the targettext receiver, achieve the goal of an effective translation from the source-text to the targettext.During the translation, after analyses,in the context that discussed in the dissertation, the roles of the initiator, the commissioner, the target-text receiver and the source-text producer is invisible. The author of this dissertation plays the role as the translator, the retailers and customers are the target-text users. Some parts of the translation are presented in two versions due to different requests of the retailers and customers-for the retailers, the faithful and thorough comprehension of the craft is crucial for its sales;while for customers with multiple backgrounds, they need the quick start-up of the craft and easily understandable manual. This translation report uses translational action theory as the theoretical foundation, after considering different request of the translation, analyses of the features of vocabulary, sentences discourses and format are made: the vocabulary in this manual comprises numerous terminologies;and the wide application of impersonal sentences, passive voice and clauses are the features of sentences in this manual;the features of discourses include the fixed words to reveal cohesion;then, multiple translation strategies and techniques like adaptation of meanings, transformation of voices, alteration of the order of words in compound sentences are applied;and last, the translated text is presented. This dissertation holds the opinion that the relationship among participants of translation behavior is dynamicin some scenarios, certain participants maybe invisible, but this theory is still applicable. It is still compatible to apply this theory in actual translation as in analyzing its process and different requirements of the participants. However, due to the limited time, personal capability and research target, the author is unable to conduct further and deeper research, which remains to be improved in the future research.
