With the rapid development of globalization the boom of video game industrybrings the prosperity of video game software localization industry. As one of the mostimportant markets in the world, China has become more and more popular with videogame publishers, which establishes the great demand and significance for video gamesoftware localization. This research attempts to analyze game texts in the video game StarCraft2fromthe perspective of Functionalist Translation Theory especially from Nord’sTranslation Theory by setting up a database extracted from the game’s English versionand Simplified Chinese version for the purpose of probing into translation principlesand strategies of video game software translation in order to achieve a better gameexperience for players. This research finds that there are only two functions of game texts in thedatabase: referential function and appellative function. And then five translationmethods are found: free translation, literal translation, re-creation, fixed translationand transliteration. Different functions of game texts apply different translationstrategies and methods while free translation that takes44.8%is the mostfrequently-applied translation method among the five and literal translation the secondfrequently-applied translation method that occupies19.7%. It concludes that frequentapplication of domestication is the major principle to achieve a good game experiencein the video game localization, which weakens the strangeness of foreign game textson condition that the features of the source texts culture is well preserved to its mostextent.
