Marx's view of language highlights the practical nature of language and lets language return to the real life of human beings. However, speculative philosophy comprehend language abstractly as concepts and categories that deviate from real life processes,or superficially consider it as tools and symbols.Due to the deviation from the actual source and historical content of language, these two ways of comprehension unconsciously cover the practical nature of language. If the language is separated from the actual personal practice, then it will come the meaningless “word”,“concept” or “category” in the conceptual world. It can be seen that clarifying and demonstrating the practical nature of Marx's language view is a very significant subject. To accurately understand Marx's language view,we should integrate it with the“philosophical revolution” established by him. After this revolution,Marx deeply revealed the real life foundation of language, reflected and revised the abstraction of speculative philosophy of language, and profoundly clarified the practical nature of the language.Different from speculative philosophers,Marx did not abstract the language, but advocated that “language is only the manifestation of real life” instead.Marx took the “realistic individual” of the historical materialism as starting point to discuss the issues of language, and“social existence determining social consciousness” as the ideological premise to clarify language view.Marx suggested that language originates from real life, which is essentially a“practical awareness”,that is,the expression of the concept of human practical power. Therefore,Marx asserted that “language is the perceptual nature” and “language is the direct realization of thought”,which clearly shows that language is a practical expression of social life.In the meantime, language doesn't have an independent history and any language is a representation of human practice in a particular era.It can be seen that the major theoretical contribution of Marx's language view lies in: revealing the social practical foundation of the language, and establishing the practical nature of language. As this reason,Marx opposed any theoretical criticism in the language of abstract speculation. He believed that language should be derived from social practice and show the social practice itself. In this sense,Marx thought that language naturally contains a fundamental criticism of denying historicism and revolutionary character in capitalism, rather than reflects statically the bourgeois ideology.Undoubtedly, clarifying the practical nature of Marx's language view is of great significance in contemporary value. The “practical interpretation of language” principle established by Marx helps us understand the essence of language — from practice and changing with practice, and also assists us in accurately understanding Marxism.
