A Study Of The Harmony Approach Of Xu Yuanchong's English Translation Of Tang Poetry

Tang poetry has its unique structure and characteristics different from other literary genres.Conflicts in poetry translation lie in the conflicts between aesthetic objects of Chinese and Western poetry,conflicts in ideology of Chinese and Western poetry and the embodiment of faithfulness standard in the form and meaning of Chinese and Western poetry.The purpose of the translator and the communicative purpose of the translation determine which translation strategy the translator adopts to make the target readers more receptive.The translator should ensure the faithful presentation of the original text and can adjust it appropriately to achieve the purpose of translation.The translator's intention and the original intention should be balanced to achieve a harmonious relationship between the original,the translator and the target language readers.Harmony translation explores the standards and methods of translation and requires proper handling of the relationship of the various elements of translation.As far as translation is concerned,translation refers to aesthetics-related merging,ecology-related balance and philosophy-related unity.Based on harmony translation,this thesis takes Xu Yuanchong's translation of Tang poetry as the research object with harmony approach used to interpret poetry translation from the three dimensions of aesthetics,ecology and philosophy with case studies in a descriptive way.In terms of aesthetics-related harmony translation,this thesis discusses the merging of beauty in sense,sound and form of the English translation of Tang poetry from the perspective of three beauties mainly relying on translation aesthetics: beauty in sense with striking images,broad themes and characteristic literary techniques,beauty in sound with rhythmic and musical language and beauty in form with a free,varied and regular sentence structure.In terms of ecology-related harmony translation,the original text and translation are balanced at linguistic level,cultural level and communicative level through the translator's selection and adaptation focusing on the integrity of the ecological environment.That is the translator's adaptive selection and transformation of language forms,attention to the transmission of cultural connotation and the realization and interpretation of communication intentions in the process of translation.In terms of philosophy-related harmony translation,this thesis realizes the unity of opposites between translator's translation methods and strategies such as literal translation and free translation,domestication and foreignization in theory and coordinates the relationship between the original text,translation and the target reader in practice.On account of harmony translation,the use of different methods and strategies of translation highlights the unity of opposition of poetry translation.The translation of Tang poetry is not only satisfied with faithfulness,but also reproduces the thought and artistic conception of source poetry.The translator adapts to translation eco-environments of Tang poetry,makes adaptive selection to balance the contradiction between source language and target language and adjusts the choice of linguistic level,cultural level and communicative level.Finally,there is the ideal translation with integration adaptation and selection.Harmony translation not only solves the difficulties in translation research and translation practice,but also helps to spread Chinese culture of poetry and realize the purpose of cross-cultural communication.
