"Jiao"???is a common verb in modern Chinese language. It has several meanings, one of which is"be named as",taking a name noun as its object. It is noteworthy that there is another "jiao"with a relatively empty meaning, which is used for subjective evaluation in the discourse. We suppose that the latter "jiao"??2?is the product of grammaticalization of the former one??1?.This dissertation includes two parts:distinguishing between the two "jiao"and describing this process of grammaticaliztion. The contents of each chapter are as follows:Chapter 1 introduces four aspects:a)the current research status of "jiao1"and "jiao2";b)the theoretical background of this research;c)the framework of this dissertation;d)the source of the data we use.Chapter 2 and 3 tell the difference between the two "jiao":Chapter 2 is about "jiao1",introducing its syntactic features, transformation relation with other forms, discourse functions and the source of its meaning. The discussion in this chapter aims at proving that "jiao1"is a lexical verb whose meaning could be indeed described as"be named as".Chapter 3 is about "jiao2",introducing the same aspects as the former chapter. In addition,we survey several constructions with "jiao2"inside.Having compared these features with "jiao1",we can conclude that "jiao2"can merely show the"concrete-abstract"relation between its subject and object, bearing no real significance.Chapter 4 focuses on the process of grammaticalization.First,we divide the grammaticalizational process of "jiao"into four stages, among which we focus on the bridging stage?three possibilities are provided?and conventionalization stage?two constructions are given as the form of this stage?.Secondly,we attribute the prerequisite of this process to the close relationship between "jiao1"and"shi".Thirdly,the motivation of this process is the change of context, which refers to the shift of the semantic relation between the subject and the object combined with "jiao".Lastly, the effect of analogy of the verb"huan"???is also mentioned.Chapter 5 is the final part, including the conclusion of this dissertation. There is1 table and 51 references in this dissertation.
