The Research Of Thomas Girtin's Architectural Expression In Watercolor Paintings

Thomas Girtin(1775--1802)was an English painter of watercolours and etchings in the late 18 th century.This article is about how Girtin's watercolor architectural painting style changed from the traditional topographic painting period to the lyrical period under the background of the great social and economic development and artistic prosperity brought by the industrial revolution in Britain.The significance of this paper is to study the expression of Girtin's watercolor architectural painting style,so that readers can have a better understanding of the formation and development of watercolor architectural painting art in Britain in the 18 th and 19 th centuries,and provide some valuable reference materials for other scholars who study British watercolor architectural painting or the characteristics of Girtin's painting.Firstly,this paper studies the formation process of Girtin's watercolor architectural painting style,and divides the painting art styles in three different periods according to the social environment at that time,so as to find out the transformation process from the terrain painting to the lyrical art style.Second to Girtin's watercolor construction through analyzing the causes of the formation of painting style,namely through his era background,the traditional painting and its artistic experience to carry on the detailed,find out that his art style from shift terrain painting to the lyric,reflected under the influence of many factors,he dares to break the traditional spirit of innovation.From the aspects of modeling,composition and color,the evolution process of his painting techniques is studied,and the transformation of his expression methods in different painting and architectural themes is analyzed.Finally,it analyzes the influence of Girtin's watercolor architectural painting style on contemporary British painters and later generations of painters,which opens a new way for British watercolor painting.At present,Thomas Girtin's name has not been widely known in domestic academic and art circles.Through the research and analysis of his artistic style and artistic concept,it may become an important channel to learn British watercolor painting,so that readers can be more familiar with British culture and have a deeper understanding of this great artist.
