The study of lexical chunk is a hot topic in the field of second language acquisition.Phrasal verb belongs to lexical chunk,but the research on phrasal verb through repeated reading is rarely seen.The purpose of this study is to discuss the frequency of repeated reading on phrasal verb acquisition,in which the passage for repeated reading is the same.Based on the noticing hypothesis,levels-of-processing theory and power law of practice,this paper has explored the optimal frequency of repeated reading on receptive and productive English phrasal verb acquisition for junior high school students at different English levels.There are two research questions:(1)What are the optimal frequencies of repeated reading on receptive phrasal verb acquisition for learners at different English levels?(2)What are the optimal frequencies of repeated reading on productive phrasal verb acquisition for learners at different English levels?In this study,134 first grade junior high school students from three parallel classes participated in the experiment.Based on students' English scores for entrance examination,weekly extracurricular reading time and vocabulary test results,40 top students,40 intermediate students and 40 underachievers were selected.The analysis of their scores was used to explore the above two questions.In this study,the reading passage was selected from the first volume of English textbooks for the seventh grade,in which less than 8% of the words were new and the 7 selected target phrasal verbs were unfamiliar for students.Participants were given areading exercise at noon of every Thursday.The post test was implemented after each repeated reading.There were 7 times of repeated reading in this experiment.In order to avoid the influence of memory trace caused by specific order of phrasal verbs,the sequence of exercises in each test has been changed.The results have shown that:(1)For receptive phrasal verb acquisition,the optimal frequencies for top students,intermediate students and underachievers are 3,4,and 6respectively.(2)For productive phrasal verb acquisition,the optimal frequencies for top students and intermediate students are 4 and 6 respectively,and the optimal frequency for underachievers is not sure.With SPSS.21,this paper has explored the optimal frequency of receptive and productive phrasal verbs acquisition by repeated reading in order to help junior high school teachers teach students in accordance with students' aptitude in vocabulary teaching.In view of the fact that the study is only a reflection and improvement of the teacher's teaching process,with limited teaching objects and research duration,as well as various characteristics of students,the conclusion of this study has some limitations.The experiment has yet to be further refined.
