Vocabulary acquisition has always been one of the important topics in foreign language teaching. In recent years,IVA has received more and more attention in the field of SLA research. However,a large number of studies have indicated that IVA can be realized in natural reading, but the probability of acquisition is very low,and that glossing language can be used to better promote RIVA and PIVA has not attained a consistent conclusion. Therefore, based on the existing research, this thesis takes the theory of input hypothesis and noticing hypothesis as the theoretical bases to explore how different glossing languages(Chinese Gloss,English Gloss)can be used in incidental vocabulary acquisition in English reading of senior high school students.Besides,in order to better compare and analyze experimental data, this study adds NG as the control group, trying to answer the following two questions:(1)What are the effects of glossing languages(Chinese Gloss,English Gloss and No gloss)on receptive incidental vocabulary acquisition in English of senior high school students respectively?(2)What are the effects of glossing languages(Chinese Gloss,English Gloss and No gloss)on productive incidental vocabulary acquisition in English of senior high school students respectively? This study took 45 students from Grade 2 of a senior high school as subjects. They were randomly divided into CG group,EG group and NG group and each group comprised 15 students.Their scores of the final English exam in the last term and recent monthly English test illustrated that the three groups’ English level was basically the same. The subjects of the three groups were asked to read the same English article with ten target words in different glossing languages and to complete the subsequent reading comprehension test within the specified time.Subsequently, the author conducted an IVT on them. The vocabulary test was composed of RVK test and PVK test of the target words. One week later,DVT was performed, and the test content was exactly the same as the immediate test.In order to avoid possible memory traces caused by specific vocabulary order, the author adjusted the appearance order of target words in vocabulary test. After the experiment was completed, the experimental data was analyzed with SPSS 21.0.The results of present study reveal that: 1)After the experiment,CG group and EG group are better than NG group in terms of RVK and PVK among three glossing groups;however,in RVK,CG are more conducive to the RIVA.2)After the experiment,CG group and EG group perform better than NG group in terms of RVK and PVK among three glossing groups;nevertheless, regarding PVK,EG are more beneficial to the PIVA.In addition,in the reading training of students, this research has certain reference value for English teachers to select corresponding reading materials based on learners’ English proficiency and needs, guiding students to use glosses so as to enhance their autonomous learning ability. However, due to the sample size of this study is small and the glossing language is relatively single,in order to better understand the effect of glossing language types on IVA,more studies are needed in this area.
