A Report On The Translation Of The Varieties Of Metaphysical Poetry(Lectures ? And ?)

This report,based on the translation material of The Varieties of Metaphysical Poetry” by Thomas Stearns Eliot.The source text belongs to literary lecture and represents Eliot's 40 years of literary thoughts and the crystallization of his first 20 years of academic practice.These lectures are also the basis of his academic development in the next 20 years.Academic lectures aim to convey information and share academic achievements.This report mainly discusses the text characteristics and translation difficulties of academic lectures,and provides corresponding translation strategies and methods in order to provide guidance for the translation of academic lectures in the field of literature.This paper firstly makes an introduction to the background and significance of the project and the source text.Due to the informational and literary characteristics of literary lectures,this paper based on Peter Newmark's text typology theory,especially the informative text.Then,this paper sums up the key and difficult points in the process of translation,and discusses specific cases in combination with communicative translation and semantic translation.The Chinese translation of source text is the outcome of a variety of translation strategies and translation techniques purposely intended to achieve translation goals.This report focuses on the key and difficult points in translation from three aspects: lexical level,syntactic level and textual level.Furthermore,it presenting corresponding translation methods to solve them.Through this translation practice,the author found that the text typology theory is very practical.The difficulty of literary lecture translation is that the literary terms are obscure and difficult to understand.Before translation,the translator must fully understand the literary knowledge in the field of source text,and use the method of semantic translation and communicative translation to reproduce the original meaning.
