Leos Carax,as one of most influential directors in contemporary French film community,has once been hailed by Les Cahiers du Cinema as the “Golden Boys” and “the Three Geniuses in French Movie”(les trois talents du cinéma franais)among French film industry together with Luc Besson and Jean-jacques Benx.Different from directors of academism or the “directors of offspring of well-known directors”,Leos Carax constitutes one of film directors with the most heterogeneous features during the time of “New French Film”,a special period separated from the history of film.Instead,like many his predecessors in the period of Nouvelle Vague,Leos Carax only started to devoted himself into film creation after watching a host of films in French film library.Since his very first feature film,Boy Meets Girl,“love” has become the eternal theme in his films.Except for the film,Pola X,adopted from a novel by Melville,four other his films are all about the subtle and sensitive reaction of love of four pairs of boys and girls with different ages,which displays a certain kind of consistency and stage characteristic.His works always go with a sort of “tragedy”.Over the past three decades of director career,he only created five feature films and hardly make an appearance in public,so he seems to be “insulated“ to box office,yet can invariably achieve a shocking word of mouth effect with his new work that integrated years of his hard working.At the occasion of the centenary of the birth of film,an array of the most authoritative French movie critics and experts have selected one hundred memorable film moments since the birth of film.Among others,China's filmmakers stand for the “fifth generation” learner of the film,while in terms of France,the representative figure of French cenozoic directors goes to Leos Carax and his film Les Amants du Pont-Neuf.At present,most of the relevant literatures on Leos Carax's movies are abroad,which are concentrated in the field of pan-cultural research.The detailed interpretation as well as meaning excavation in their movie texts are not specific enough.There is only one comprehensive document in China,but the production concept of Carax and his own understanding of the “author” influence his movies' concept as well as creative style.This influence requires to be discussed under the background of “lenouveau cinéma franais”.Besides,the “cinephilia” complex contained in Leos Carax's movies is extremely prominent.In this sense,this study is a systematic enhancement of the study of Carax movies.In recent years,the upsurge of “lenouveau cinéma franais” research at home and abroad has laid a solid theoretical foundation for this research.Under such a background,this paper intends to refine the unique themes as well as styles in Leos Carax's movies through refining the elements and meanings within the movie texts,thereby having an overall understanding of his movie creation.The first part of this study is the introduction,and the second part is the main body.In the first chapter of the main body,the author starts with the background of the “lenouveau cinéma franais” and the movie policy between them,reveals the creative motivation of Carax,and its production strategy is inextricably linked to the “lenouveau cinéma franais”.Then,this paper presents a brief overview of Carax's short movie creation as well as feature movie creation.The second chapter focuses on analyzing the theme and the narrative characteristics of the movie in Leos Carax.The third chapter studies the unique movie elements in Leos Carax's movies,such as audiovisual presentation and shot application style.The fourth chapter analyzes the diffused “cinephilia” complex in Carax's works and the presentation as well as exchange from the perspective of cultural studies.This study attempts to start with Leos Carax's unique position in the “lenouveau cinéma franais” and refine the themes,elements,and styles in his movie texts.In addition to its role of expanding the diversity of the research sample of “lenouveau cinéma franais”,the uniqueness of Leos Carax's movie can also be discussed in this movie history stage,thereby revealing the inheritance and evolution of the “new cinephilia spirit” from the “cinephilia” contained in the text of Carax's movies.
