For many years,domestic and foreign scholars have studied teacher questioning from different perspectives.In language teaching,teacher questioning is an important channel for teachers to input and transmit teaching information to students,build a bridge between teachers and students,and cause emotional resonance between teachers and students.This thesis focuses on teacher questioning in English reading class of senior high school,and the aim is to solve two research questions:No.1: What is the current situation of teacher questioning in English reading class of senior high school?(Including types of questions,questioning strategies,waiting-time and teacher feedback.)No.2: Based on the criteria of effective questioning,is the teacher questioning effective in English reading class in senior high school?Based on the research questions,this study chooses three English teachers and 133 students as survey subjects in a middle school in Hainan Province.The two research questions were solved through the method of classroom observation,questionnaire survey,and interview.The results of the study show that the three English teachers have the following points in common: they ask both confirmative questions and the Wh-questions in reading classes,and the ratio of the Wh-questions is higher than the confirmative questions;In the aspect of questioning strategies,owing to teachers consciously protect students' self-esteem and self-confidence,repeating strategy and prompting strategy are mostly used in English reading classes;In the aspect of waiting-time,they seldom leave more than 3seconds for students to think about the questions;In the aspect of teacher feedback,teachers often use positive feedback to encourage students;At the same time,in the reading class,teachers didn't express some temporary questions clearly,and the teachers questioning didn't fully stimulate students' interest in English learning or arouse students' deep thinking.Therefore,according to the problems found in the above research,some teaching enlightenment was put forward.The findings were also expected to provide some beneficial tips for teachers' questioning in senior high school English reading class.
