The Effect Of The Expression Of Pride On The Interpersonal Distance Of The Observers

Pride is positive self-awareness emotion,which is positive subjective emotional experience produced when an individual attributes a successful event or positive event to his/her own ability or effort.The study found that emotional expression will affect interpersonal communication,which in turn affects the distance between the observers and the expressers.Based on previous researches,this article explores the relationship between the expressers of pride and the observers' interpersonal distance and whether the observers' perception of social status has an impact on this relationship.Furthermore,it is worth exploring whether the above relationship exists in different types of expression of pride(Hubristic Pride/Authentic Pride).To this end,this article launches the following two studies:Study 1: The relationship of the expression of pride and neutral emotion and the observers' interpersonal distance and the moderating effect of the observers' perception of social status.Experiment 1a: A three-factor mixed experiment design of 2(emotion type of pictures: pride/neutral emotion)× 2(character gender of pictures: male/female)× 2(subject gender: male/female)is selected,and 80 college students are selected for the subjects,exploring the influence of pride expression on the interpersonal distance of the observers.It is found that the type of emotional expression and the gender of the emotional expressers have significant effect on the interpersonal distance of the observers.Experiment 1b: A two-factor mixed experiment design of 2(emotion type of pictures: pride/neutral emotion)× 2(perception of observers' social status: perception of low social status/ perception of high social status)is adopted,and 60 college students are selected as subjects,exploring the moderating effect of the observers' perception of social status on the relationship between the emotional type and the interpersonal distance of the observers.The moderating effect of observers' perception of social status is found.Study 2: The influence of the expression of Hubristic Pride and AuthenticPride on the interpersonal distance of the observers and the moderating effect of the observers' perception of social status.Experiment 2a: A single-factor two-level(pride type of pictures: Hubristic Pride/Authentic Pride)experimental design is used,and 80 college students are selected as subjects to explore the influence of the expression of Hubristic Pride and Authentic Pride on the interpersonal distance of the observers.It is found that there is significant difference in the influence of the expression of the two pride on the interpersonal distance of the observers.The distance of the observers of the Authentic Pride picture group is significantly smaller than that of the Hubristic Pride picture group.Experiment 2b: A two-factor mixed experiment design of 2(pride type of pictures: Hubristic Pride/Authentic Pride)× 2(perception of observers' social status: perception of low social status/perception of high social status)is adopted,and 100 college students are selected as participants explored the moderating effect of perception of observers' social status on the relationship between different pride emotion and observers' interpersonal distance.The moderating effect of observers' perception of social status is found.In summary,the expression of pride and neutral emotion has a significant impact on the interpersonal distance of the observers,and the observers' perception of social status plays a regulating role in it;the expression of Hubristic Pride and Authentic Pride affects significantly the interpersonal distance of the observers,and the observers' perception of social status also plays a regulatory role.
