Construction Of "Red China" Image In The Fu She Version Of Red Star Over China From The Perspective Of Symbolic Capital

Since the emerging of sociological approach to translation studies,there has not been enough empirical studies that have influential and substantive effect on socio-translation studies.How does translation become a driving force for social development? How to establish legitimacy and obtain the initiative and superior position through translation in the war? These questions have not been clearly answered.This study focuses on the Yenan1 Base Area during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression of China.The research object is the Fu She Version of Red Star over China(FSV),and the theoretical tool is symbolic capital in Bourdieu's sociological theory.This thesis proposes three research questions:(1)How did the FSV construct the image of “Red China”?(2)What role did the “Red China” image constructed by the FSV play in the symbolic capital accumulation of the Chinese Communist Party(CCP)?(3)What is the mechanism of the CCP's symbolic capital to transform into combat power in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression?In view of the above questions,this thesis mainly adopts such qualitative research methods as literature research,case study,theoretical thinking and text analysis to conduct research.The major findings are:(1)The FSV constructed the “Red China” image of wise and cordial leaders,patriotic and brave Red Army soldiers,and simple and optimistic people by faithfully conveying the original text and adopting other translation strategies;(2)The FSV's contribution to the FSV's symbolic capital accumulation is mainly reflected in constructing the positive image and personal charisma of the CCP leaders,being one of the earliest disseminators of the Yenan spirit and promoting the formation of the counter-Japanese national united front;(3)The mechanism of symbolic capital generating combat power for the CCP is through its promotion of cohesion,inspiration,mobilization,integration,deterrence,disintegration,appeal,assimilation and innovation.These factors generated a large amount of military soft power,which is a multiplier of military hard power.Thus,symbolic capital greatly enhanced the combat power of the army led by the CCP.Red Star over China is a treasure trove of Chinese red culture.It has practical significance for resisting historical nihilism and curbing the recent reactionary trend which attempts to negate revolution and revolutionary heroes leaded by the CCP.By studying the image construction mechanism of “Red China”,this study can provide valuable reference for constructing China's national image and telling the Chinese story.This study will also reveal the relationship between symbolic capital accumulation and image construction,expand the interpretation space of Bourdieu's symbolic capital theory,and to some extent promote the application of socio-translation studies.
