Translation Of V-ing Non-finite Clauses From The Perspective Of Systemic-functional Linguistics

Translation science is the applied logic.In the process of translation,the translator needs to analyze the logic of the original text,and adopt appropriate translation methods to organize the reasoning structure of the original text.Under the guidance of clause complex in the Systemic-Functional Linguistics,this report studies the translation of V-ing non-finite clauses by judging the logico-semantic relations between clauses in the original text,with examples taken from the translation practice Energy Efficiency 2018.This report comes up with the translation methods of the V-ing non-finite clauses based on the similarities and differences between clause complexes in English and complex sentences in Chinese under the guidance of clause complex.According to the clause complex,there are three kinds of logico-semantic relations between clauses: elaborating,extending and enhancing.In Chinese,complex sentences can be divided into two categories: joint complex sentences and subordinate complex sentences.This report translates V-ing non-finite clauses into joint clauses,subordinate clauses and other clauses in Chinese that can reflect the same logico-semantic relations by analyzing the logico-semantic relations between V-ing non-finite clauses and the main sentences.In this way,the same logico-semantic relations as the original text can be preserved in the translated text.This study has found that the V-ing non-finite elaborating clause is translated as the commentary clause with the addition of the subject“?”or“??+??”and the addition of category words.When the V-ing non-finite extending clause has a subject,it is translated into the compound clause with the same subject or another proper subject.But if there is no subject,a subject is shared with the main sentence.When the V-ing non-finite enhancing clause enhances the primary clause in the aspect of result,purpose,concessive condition,time or manner,it can be translated into a cause-effect primary clause,a purpose primary clause,a transition clause,an adverbial clause of time or an adverbial clause of manner.The translator can faithfully preserve the logico-semantic relations between clauses in the original text in the translated text by adopting the translation methods above.Therefore,the logic in the translation is very smooth.
