Vocabulary is of great significance in English language learning.Although much time is spent on vocabulary learning and teaching,the results are not in proportion to the efforts exerted.As a great thinking tool,mind mapping uses visual symbols to arouse students' learning interests.Moreover,it gives full play to students' initiative and develops their thinking quality.Hence,applying mind mapping in English vocabulary review classes,to some extent,ameliorates the current situation of vocabulary memorization.Through literature review,the effects of applying mind mapping to English vocabulary review classes with the aid of an online mind mapping system are explored in few studies.Therefore,this research tries to study the impact of mind mapping on English vocabulary reviewing in primary school with the aid of an online mind-mapping system as the periodical vocabulary test.In the research,the author puts forwards three questions: 1)What's the current situation of English vocabulary learning and reviewing in primary school? 2)How is the mind mapping teaching method applied to English vocabulary review classes? 3)What are the effects of applying mind mapping in English vocabulary review classes on students' English vocabulary memorization and their abilities to categorize words by their hierarchical or logical relations?This thesis adopts both qualitative and quantitative research methods,including tests,questionnaires,interviews and data analysis.Through these methods,conclusions have been drawn as follows: 1)Although most students in Grade Six takean interest in learning English vocabulary and are quite satisfied with their current English vocabulary learning,a large proportion of them don't have a sound vocabulary learning strategies or habits.2)Methods of situational teaching and cooperative learning are adopted to apply mind mapping to English vocabulary review classes.3)On the one hand,applying mind mapping to English vocabulary review classes can improve students' memorization of vocabulary.On the other hand,it can enhance students' ability of categorization.This research attempts to apply mind mapping to English vocabulary reviewing to improve students' memorization of words and enhance their ability of categorization.A new attempt as the research is,it is of great significance to help the students who want to improve their vocabulary memorization and the teachers who want to make their instructions more effective and efficient.
