Reading is an effective way for learners to obtain information,so it plays a significant role in language learning. It is well recognized that to get sufficient valuable information of high quality often depends on the learners' reading abilities. The New Curriculum Standard also emphasizes the importance of adequate language input in language teaching. Thus, reading is of great significance in English teaching.Due to the limited knowledge of English in primary school students,English teaching in primary schools is still mainly presented by the explanation of teachers.Generally speaking, primary school students have poor reading initiative, which leads to the low interest in reading.Meanwhile, reading strategies, good reading habits and the training and cultivation of reading ability have not received adequate attention.Further, the related researches on the cultivation of primary school students' autonomous reading ability have not yet attracted much attention from experts and scholars.Consequently, the cultivation of students' English reading ability is one of the most important tasks for English teaching in primary schools.Based on the present situation, further study on primary school students' English reading ability needs to be carried out urgently because it is crucial for the development of their'lifelong learning. Therefore, this study attempts to explore how to cultivate the students' autonomous reading ability in primary school English teaching from the perspective of mind mapping. The autonomous reading ability is a manifestation of a learner's autonomous learning ability in reading.Learners with the ability of autonomous reading will be interested in reading and have positive reading motivation. Thus, they are able to use effective reading strategies to monitor their reading process and behavior and in turn assess the reading effectiveness. The autonomous reading emphasizes readers' subjectivity and the full play of their initiative. The cultivation of autonomous reading ability under the guidance of teachers is a necessary way to help students form the habit of autonomous reading, eventually becoming autonomous readers.Mind mapping, which is a powerful tool and an effective way to visualize the process of thinking, was put forward by Tony Buzan in1960 s.It refers to the use of words, numbers, logic and other functions of the left brain, combined with the use of color, images, symbols, spatial awareness and other functions of the right brain. With the wide application of mind mapping in the field of education and teaching,it has been favored by many scholars and teachers and students at different levels.Guided by the constructivism learning theory, knowledge visualization theory and schema theory, this study intends to apply the mind mapping to English reading teaching of primary schools. The purpose of this paper is to study the effectiveness of mind mapping as a teaching tool in primary school English reading teaching and explore whether the use of mind mapping can stimulate students' interest in reading and assist to cultivate students' reading strategies and habits, and then improve their autonomous reading ability in English learning.,The present research was conducted with the students in Grade 5 in one primary school in Qingdao as the subjects, with the combined use of literature reviews, questionnaires and teaching case as the research methods. The students of Grade 5have a certain amount of knowledge of English and a higher demand for language information acquisition,so they have much practical significance for the study. In the early stage of this study,90 students in two parallel classes in grade 5 were investigated by means of questionnaire.90 questionnaires were issued and 90 questionnaires were collected.Using Excel's data analysis,it was found that most students in Grade 5 lack the interests, motivation and strategies in English reading. The attitude toward reading tasks is mostly for completing homework or because of examination pressure Based on this, this study will explore how to apply mind mapping to primary school English reading teaching so as to improve the students' autonomous reading ability. The study is mainly designed from three aspects: before reading, mind mapping is used to arouse students' reading interests by brainstorming vocabulary or topic;while reading,it is used to help students find keywords and clarify the structure of articles to cultivate good reading strategies;after reading,it is used to provide students with language output and framework to form good languagehabits.Through the three aspects, the study attempts to verify the effectiveness of mind mapping in English reading teaching through practical teaching cases. At the end of the study, another questionnaire was conducted to investigate the subjects.Through the analysis and discussion, the study concludes that mind mapping as an assistant tool in English reading teaching in primary school is effective in improving students' autonomous reading ability. This study holds that from the perspective of the use of mind mapping, the specific study is of great theoretical and practical significance in improving pupils' English quality, developing their autonomous learning ability and improving the quality of English teaching in primary schools. It is sincerely hoped that this study can contribute to the promotion of primary school English teaching and the improvement of students' autonomous learning ability.
