On Translation Of Long English Sentences In Academic Texts From The Perspective Of Newmark's Text Typology Theory

This thesis uses the tenth chapter of The Psychology of Green Organizations as translation material.Under the guidance of Peter Newmark's text typology and combined with translation examples,the specific translation methods of long English sentences in academic texts with informative function are discussed.Peter Newmark divided texts into three types: expressive text,informative text and vocative text according to their functions,and put forward two translation methods: semantic translation and communicative translation.Semantic translation attempts to convey the exact contextual meaning of the original,which requires the translation to be close to the form of the original text.Communicative translation emphasizes the effect of information transmission and focuses on the comprehension and response of target readers.Newmark pointed out that semantic translation is suitable for expressive texts,and communicative translation is suitable for informative and vocative texts.According to Newmark's text typology and analysis of the characteristics of translation material,the author classified the translation material as an informative text,and therefore adopted mainly communicative translation in the translation.The author found that there is a frequent use of long sentences in the source text.The complex structure of the sentences and the differences between English and Chinese caused difficulties in translation.According to the communicative translation,we should pay attention to the effect of information transmission,and there is no need to rigidly adhere to the original text.Therefore,in the process of translation,the author flexibly used different translation methods,including reversing,division,metaphrasing and synthesizing,to accurately convey the information of the original text and make the translation conform to the expression habits of target readers.Through translation practice,the author believes that it is feasible for Peter Newmark's text typology to guide the translation of academic texts,and his communicative translation can give full play to its advantages in the translation of long English sentences.It is expected that this paper will provide some reference for the translation of long English sentences.
