Mongolian traditional performing arts have always been a subject of research attracting close attention of scholars both in China and abroad,but few focuses on its connection with identity.Mongolian Music,Dance and Narrative Performing Diverse Identities,an ethnography written by the well-known British folk musicologist and anthropologist,Carole Pegg and published by the University of Washington Press in 2001,made a research from the four aspects of “performing ethnicity,history and place ”,“embodying spiritual landscapes ”,“creating society,time and space ” and the “transforming political identity ”.The author,centering around the performance,takes all kinds of Mongolian traditional performance genres as the research object,and analyzes its connection with identity from a unique anthropological perspective.Based on a solid field investigation,this book is the theoretical achievements of the author's years of painstaking research containing precious and detailed first-hand information,which is the only work making a comprehensive study on Mongolian music in full English.The book,featuring informative content and in-depth analysis,is of important reference value in this field.This paper,revolving around Mongolian Music,Dance,and Narrative Performing Diverse Identities,mainly focuses on the translation and research of its main contents and core ideas.This paper comprises four chapters.The first chapter is a brief review of the book,among which the author briefly introduces the writing background and main topics of the book,explores the translation value and significance of the book,explains the relevant key concepts of the ethnicity,connection and oral narrative,etc.The second chapter,centering on“performance”,mainly discusses the diversity of Mongolian performing arts and the complexity of traditional performance rules,and explains how Mongolian ethnic groups form a complex connection with history,religion and politics and obtain multiple identities,and how to verify and consolidate their identities through“performance”.The third chapter mainly elaborates a national artistic creation--the artificial construction of a new socialist state identity arises from the political turmoil in Mongolia.What has changed as“performance”as the main transformation tool and approach?Facing the advent of the democratic revolution,along with the relaxation of the humanistic context of the whole society,the“performance”with socialist features ushered in the new“Renais??(san)ce”,thus the traditional performance arts of old Mongolia was revived.With the circumstance of globalization and the fusion of multiple-musical context,“performance”ofMongolian ethnic groups began to demonstrate its new look on the stage of globalization.Finally,the fourth chapter summarizes the author's main perspectives and positions,describes her writing style,and also makes a reflection on the translation process.
