Rachel Joyce is a contemporary British writer.Although till now only four of his novels have been published,all of them have set off a nationwide reading boom and also become popular books in the world.Joyce's works are mainly based on the ordinary people's daily life.Besides,his works always combines with his life experience and his understanding of creation.On the premise of ecological criticism and based on the theory of spiritual ecology,this paper tries to study the rich spiritual ecological thoughts expressed by the author in The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and reveal the process of spiritual ecology from “imbalance to rebuild”.By analyzing reasons which caused modern people's spiritual ecology imbalance,we call on all mankind to pay more attention to the healthy of their spiritual development,in order to explore the methods for modern people to achieve their own spiritual and ecological balance.This paper consists of three parts: Introduction,body and conclusion.The introduction part clarifies the research value of spiritual ecology,briefly combs the researches of Joyce's The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry at home and abroad.By doing all of these,this paper wants to demonstrate the value of this book under the theory of spiritual ecology,and state the research methods and innovation points of this paper.The body part is broken down into four parts.The first part clarifies the concept of spiritual ecology,and explains the theory of spiritual ecology from three aspects: the definition,the course of development and the value of spiritual ecology.We can understand the theoretical basis of this paper deeper in this part.The second part displays the symptoms of ecological imbalance which are showed on the characters.These symptoms are mainly in the spirit of vacuum,the existence of alienation,the material desire of alienation.On the one hand,the analysis intends to prove the mental disorders which toured characters are not only affect people's external behavior but also destroy their spiritual world;on the other hand it makes people consider the reasons of the imbalance of mental ecological.The third part analyzes the causes of spiritual ecology imbalance under the background of the rapid development of science and technology civilization.This part expounds that the suppression of love and desire,the alienation of labor and the predicament of belief have greatly influenced people's right values and choices.From the perspective of social history,although the war has promoted the development of civilization,it has dealt a heavy blow to the spiritual world;from the perspective of individual,the crisis of subject identity has hindered the healthy and all-round self-development of human beings,which is the main internal reason of the imbalance of spiritual ecology.The fourth part is based on the beauty of human nature and nature.It constructs the healthy development of subject spirit from the perspective of society and nature,to show Rachel Joyce's uniqueness in spiritual ecology thoughts and his creativity in the construction of harmonious spiritual ecology.The conclusion part summarizes the research contents of Joyce's "Pilgrimage" novel,and expounds the value and significance of the research.Joyce stresses that modern people are facing a severe spiritual crisis,and calls on human beings to explore ways to solve the crisis.He puts the relationship between human beings and self in a prominent position in the way that people actively seeking to restore spiritual ecology.It is considered that the healthy development of individual spirit will promote the harmony of spiritual ecology and affect the whole balance of ecosystem.
