Fan Mingti,as an outstanding watercolor painter and educator in China in the 20 th century,had devoted his whole life to the study of watercolor art.He was a scholar-type artist who explored watercolor art in individuality and commonness.He integrated commonness felt in literature,music and painting into his paintings,making them have the artistic conception of "silent poetry" and "silent music".Meanwhile,he respected watercolor as a realistic style of western traditional painting,making his works tended to have a sense of "artistic reality".His painting style experienced three periods of evolution,and the language in the paintings gradually tended to be rationally constructed from a high level of generalization,which formed the "realistic and lyric style" of the paintings and opened up a new era of watercolor painting style.Fan Mingti's watercolor art achievement was the creative inheritance of the cultural connotations of the East and West,with advancing strengths and avoiding shortcomings,and being inclusive,which formed his unique artistic characteristics of freshness and deepness.The perfect combination of "poetic" and "realistic" senses,which influenced the circle of watercolor painting,making his watercolor art has a decisive position in the history of Chinese fine arts.As one of the representatives of Chinese watercolor in the 20 th century,Fan Mingti was an important participant and leader in the brilliant development of the Chinese watercolor industry,with a profound impact.This paper takes Fan Mingti's watercolor works as the research object and will analyze his unique painting language and aesthetic characteristics from different perspectives such as composition form,modeling,color and techniques of his watercolor works,with taking the development context of Chinese social history and art history in the 20 th century as the background,and according to the image analysis principles in Wolfflin's Principles of ArtHistory,and with the reference to the works such as Das Problem der Form in der Bildenden Kunst and The Form Language of Painting.Then,it will explore the formation factors of Fan Mingti's work form and style.Combining the painter's personal artistic experience and self-cultivation,in the end it will try to find the connotation and significance of his watercolor art.
