A Study On The Application Of Mutimodal PPT In Junior High School English Teaching

With the development of economy and technology,the traditional teaching style does not adapt to the development of modern education and satisfy students' learning needs.Furthermore,the main point of National English Curriculum Standards for Junior High School(2017)is that English teachers should make full use of the modern technology to enrich the curriculum resources and provide students with more multimodal discourse such as the text,picture,graph and video.Multimodal PPT,a type of multimedia courseware with two or more than two symbolic resources,adapts to the development of modern education and satisfies students' learning needs.The author adopted the questionnaire,interview,classroom observation and multimodal PPT samples analysis in order to investigate the status quo of multimodal PPT in junior high school English teaching,the multiple modes used in multimodal PPT and the reasons for the existing problems in making and using multimodal PPT in English teaching based on Multimodal Discourse Analysis theory and Input Hypothesis.So the research questions are as follows:(1)What is the status quo of the application of multimodal PPT in junior high school English teaching?(2)What multiple modes are commonly used in multimodal PPT in junior high school English teaching?(3)Why are there some problems existed in making and using multimodal PPT in junior high school English teaching? The author collected 200 valid questionnaires for students and 30 valid questionnaires for teachers and three teachers' 393 multimodal PPT slides in Wu Yuan No.3 and No.5 middle schools of Bayannur City.Furthermore,the author interviewed three English teachers and five students and recorded the relevant information of six multimodal PPT assisted English lessons based on the classroom observation table.The results of this research are demonstrated in the followings.Firstly,the status quo of the application of multimodal PPT in junior high school English is positive:(1)Most of English teachers master basic skills of making multimodal PPT;(2)Most of teachers can can appropriately arrange the teaching time and teaching procedure in using multimodal PPT;(3)Teachers and students take positive attitudes towards the multimodal PPT.They propose that the multimodal PPT stimulates students' learning interest and provides students with a vivid and authentic environment.However,the author finds that there are some problems existed in making and using multimodal PPT such as:(1)Inappropriate use of the multimodal PPT and blackboard;(2)Less classroom interaction;(3)Inharmonious color collocation and layout;(4)Teachers' insufficient proficiency of making multimodal PPT.Secondly,there are three types of multiple modes which include the combination modes of visual mode and visual mode,thecombination modes of audio mode and visual mode and the combination modes of visual-audio mode and visual mode.The combination modes of visual mode and visual mode are more frequently used in multimodal PPT design than other two types of multiple modes.Thirdly,the reasons for the existing problems in making and using multimodal PPT are as followings:lack of time for preparation;lack of opportunities for computer technology training;over dependence on multimodal PPT;inadequate computer equipment.In order to deal with these problems,the author puts forward some suggestions:(1)Appropriately using the multimodal PPT and blackboard;(2)Enriching the classroom organization forms and enhancing classroom interaction;(3)Emphasizing the important points in the multimodal PPT;(4)Designing the multimodal PPT with harmonious color collocation and layout;(5)Providing teachers with more opportunities to receive information technology training.However,the research has some limitations.The research questions need to be explored in the following researches.
